Hayden Panettiere, the actress who grew up on American screens and became one of her generation's most recognizable young stars, died on August 16, 2026, in South Carolina. She was 36.
For many viewers, the introduction came in 2000 with Remember the Titans, when she played Sheryl Yoast, the coach's young daughter who knew the playbook better than most of the grown men on the sideline.
Then came Heroes. From 2006 to 2010 on NBC, she played Claire Bennet, the indestructible high school cheerleader at the center of the show's defining line: "Save the cheerleader, save the world."
Her finest work may have been the one that followed. As Juliette Barnes on Nashville, she played a country singer who was ambitious, wounded, and often her own worst enemy. It earned her Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actress in 2013 and 2014.
She brought a welcome streak of nerve to horror, too, as Kirby Reed in Scream 4, a character fans loved enough that she was written back into Scream VI twelve years later.
Away from acting, she advocated for ocean and marine-life conservation, and spoke publicly and unusually frankly about her experience with postpartum depression.
She leaves behind her daughter, Kaya, her family, and a body of work that runs through the childhoods of an entire generation.
