Sony releases Insidious: Out of the Further on August 21, the sixth film in a series that began in 2010. Lin Shaye returns as Elise Rainier, the role she has played in every previous entry.
Amelia Eve leads the new cast as Gemma, alongside Brandon Perea and Maisie Richardson-Sellers. Gemma is a young mother raising her daughter in her childhood home who discovers she can travel into the Further, the astral plane at the center of the series, and finds it bleeding into the real world.
The setup matters because the last film was supposed to be the last film. Insidious: The Red Door arrived in July 2023 marketed as the closing chapter of the Lambert family story, with Patrick Wilson directing and discussing it as an ending. Three years on, the series continues with a different family entirely.
Shaye told ComingSoon that her reason for returning was not financial. Speaking to Dread Central, she described the premise as "very different than anything we've seen in any of the other Insidious movies." Elise dies at the end of the first film, and Shaye has since appeared in entries set both before and after that point.
Reviews are not out yet. The film opens Friday alongside It Ends, which starts in Los Angeles and New York the same day before expanding on August 28.
