Animal attack horror has no supernatural excuse. The animal exists, you could in principle meet one, and the film only has to exaggerate. That is also the catch, because the exaggeration is the part that does damage, on screen and off.
Jaws is the one everything else is measured against, and it is still argued over by the people who study sharks. It did not create the man-eater reputation, which the 1916 attacks off New Jersey had established sixty years earlier, but it gave that reputation its lasting image, and there is a real if contested case that shark conservation has been paying for it ever since. The Birds came earlier and stages several explanations in one diner scene without endorsing any of them, which is still the more unsettling move.
The rest splits into the plausible and the frankly not. Cujo and Open Water stay close to something that could happen, while the shark and alligator films of the 2000s onward are mostly about the pleasure of the premise. Crawl is the recent one that manages both.
