Kaiju movies
A kaiju film is about scale and consequence. The monster is large enough that fighting it is a logistics problem for a government rather than a fight for a hero, and the best entries are usually about what the destruction means afterward.
Godzilla is a film about the bomb, made nine years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki by people who had lived through the war, and it is far bleaker than its reputation suggests. The series that followed drifted toward spectacle and toward children in the audience, and then reversed: The Return of Godzilla discarded every sequel in 1984 and treated the first film as the only one that had happened.
Shin Godzilla is the sharpest version of that return, spending nearly as much time on a government that cannot convene a committee as on the creature. Godzilla Minus One went further back still, to the immediate postwar years, and did it on a fraction of a Hollywood budget.
