Creature feature movies

A creature feature is a film with a thing in it. The pleasure is mechanical and completely honest: work out what it is, work out what it wants, work out what kills it, and hope somebody manages all three before it runs out of people.

The 1950s ran on them, and The Thing from Another World is the one most worth returning to. Jaws then proved the creature works better mostly unseen, largely because the mechanical shark kept failing.

Alien moved the shape into a corridor and gave the creature a life cycle. The Thing went back to the 1938 novella and restored the part the 1951 version had dropped, a creature that can be any of them, Tremors played it as a comedy without softening the monster, and The Descent found a way to make the crawl toward it worse than the arrival.
