Witchcraft movies
Witchcraft horror is about power that the people in charge cannot see, cannot regulate, and are terrified of. It cuts two ways depending on who the film is following: the accused, or the ones lighting the fire.
Häxan is the strange one at the front. Witch films predate it, but nothing else from the period looks like this: its 1922 argument is that the women burned as witches were suffering what its own era called hysteria, and it makes the case by staging the persecution at length.
Black Sunday took the executed woman and brought her back for revenge, in a gothic register inherited from the literature rather than invented for the screen. Suspiria made a coven the subject and let colour and sound carry more of the film than the plot does. The accusation has stayed the live question: The Witch takes a Puritan family's suspicion of its own daughter completely seriously, and The Love Witch rebuilds the look of 1960s melodrama around a woman whose spells work exactly as intended and ruin everything anyway.
