Occult movies

Occult horror is about what is being arranged behind you. There is a group, it has been meeting for a long time, and by the time the film's protagonist understands what they want, most of the people they would turn to are already members.

Rosemary's Baby is the film the 1970s occult cycle was built on, though it invented none of the material: satanic conspiracy had been on screen through the 1950s and 60s already. What it perfected was the social trap. The neighbours, the doctor and the husband are all in agreement, and not one of them is telling the truth.

The Devil Rides Out reached cinemas the same year, adapted from a novel published in 1934, and plays the same material as an adventure with a competent occultist on the right side. Race with the Devil takes it out onto the highway, and Hereditary withholds the arrangement until the end, then reveals that everything the family has suffered was somebody's plan.
