Haunted house movies
The haunted house is the one horror premise that everybody can argue with, because everybody knows the answer is to leave. The films are built around the reasons people do not: money, family, pride, or a mortgage they cannot get out of.
The Haunting is the one most of the others are measured against, and it shows almost nothing. The Amityville Horror arrived three years after the real house had already become a news story, and it is the one that made the money explicit: the family in the film cannot afford to walk away. Poltergeist moved the whole idea into a bright new suburb where nothing looks old enough to be haunted.
The modern run mostly divides into two. The Conjuring and the films around it went back to the investigation and the period setting, and Crimson Peak went further back still, to a house that is closer to a gothic romance with something in the basement.
