Body horror movies
Body horror puts the threat inside the skin. Nothing is chasing you, there is nowhere to run to, and the thing going wrong is the thing you were going to escape in. It is the subgenre that most reliably makes an audience physically uncomfortable.
David Cronenberg is the name most attached to it and he got there early, with Shivers in 1975 and Rabid two years later. His remake of The Fly is the one that reached a mainstream audience, running a transformation as a terminal illness in slow motion, and Videodrome and Dead Ringers work the same territory from stranger angles.
It has never been only his. Eraserhead arrived at it by a completely different route, The Thing took a premise about bodies being counterfeited that was already decades old and made it something you watch happen, Tetsuo: The Iron Man pushed it to industrial extremes, and Titane and The Substance have kept it very much alive.
