Vampire movies
The vampire is the horror monster with manners. It has to be invited, it keeps rules about thresholds and daylight and running water, and it is usually the most articulate thing in the film. Whatever else a vampire story is about, it is about someone who wants you and will wait.
Nosferatu filmed Bram Stoker's novel without the rights, renaming the count Orlok in the hope of getting away with it. It did not work. Stoker's widow sued, and in 1925 a court ordered every print destroyed. Dracula reached the novel the long way round, through the stage play adapted from it and with the rights bought, and gave the character a face that held until Christopher Lee took the part in 1958.
The rules have been rewritten steadily since, and occasionally twice at once: 1987 produced both The Lost Boys, which made vampires teenagers, and Near Dark, which put a nomadic group in a stolen RV crossing small-town Oklahoma. Let the Right One In gave one the appearance of a twelve-year-old and two centuries of practice, and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night set one loose in an Iranian ghost town on a skateboard. The monster survives all of it because the arrangement underneath never changes.
