Zombie movies
The zombie is the horror monster that scales. One is a problem you can walk away from, a hundred is the end of the world, and the story is usually about the people barricaded inside rather than the dead outside. They are slow, they do not stop, and the other survivors are frequently worse.
The word "zombie" comes from Haitian Creole, and has older west and central African roots behind that. The early films use it for something closer to servitude than to appetite: White Zombie has a mill owner working a silent labour force he controls completely, and I Walked with a Zombie leaves it genuinely open whether its catatonic woman is under a spell or simply ill. Nobody in either film eats anyone.
Night of the Living Dead rebuilt the idea around a farmhouse under siege and reanimated bodies that eat the living, and it never once calls them zombies. Dawn of the Dead moved the survivors into a shopping mall and made the subtext the point. The 2000s then took it apart from several directions at once. 28 Days Later made speed the default, decades after Nightmare City and The Return of the Living Dead had already tried it, and its Infected are not undead at all. Shaun of the Dead played the whole apparatus for laughs without breaking it, and Zombieland did the same for America. Train to Busan then proved the siege still works when you put it on a train.
