Werewolf movies
The werewolf is the monster you cannot resign from. It runs on a calendar rather than a motive, the person it happens to is usually decent and horrified, and the story is generally about the hours between transformations rather than the transformation itself.
The Wolf Man supplied most of the subgenre's furniture, including the silver and the tragic-victim framing that later films either use or push against. It did not supply the full moon: that rule arrived two years later, in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man.
What 1981 changed was nerve rather than technique. An American Werewolf in London and The Howling both landed that year and staged their transformations in bright light and at length, with nowhere to hide the joins.
Since then the interesting entries have mostly used the curse as a metaphor and been open about it. Ginger Snaps runs it through puberty, and Dog Soldiers simply drops a squad of soldiers into the woods with them.
