Cosmic horror movies
Cosmic horror is the subgenre where the threat is not interested in you. Something is out there, it operates at a scale that makes human concerns irrelevant, and understanding it is the injury rather than the defence.
Lovecraft codified the mode and named it, though he did not invent it and said so himself, crediting Machen, Blackwood and Hodgson before him. He is also a difficult source, both because his fiction is explicitly racist and because the thing he was best at describing is the thing a camera is worst at showing.
Film mostly works around that problem. The Thing shows the buried ship and then never says what the creature is, where it came from or what it wants. In the Mouth of Madness makes the reading of the fiction into the mechanism, Annihilation finds its best images in the lighthouse rather than in its creatures, and Color Out of Space adapts Lovecraft directly and runs straight into the difficulty, since a colour outside the spectrum becomes magenta the moment it is filmed.
