The Exorcist made possession a matter of doctrine, procedure and endurance, and never explains why this child. The Omen put the Antichrist into an American diplomat's household and let the father work it out far too slowly. Hellraiser is the odd one out, since its Cenobites reject the label outright, calling themselves explorers, and then break the only bargain they make in the film.
The modern run attaches its demons to households rather than to buildings. Insidious is explicit that the house is not the problem, and its family moves without escaping anything. The Conjuring and the films around it turned the investigation itself into a franchise business.
