Possession horror is about losing the argument for your own body. Something else is in there, it knows things it should not, and the people who love you have to decide what they are willing to believe in order to help.
The Exorcist set the terms so thoroughly that the subgenre still works in its vocabulary: the doctors first, then the priests, then the room. The Evil Dead took the same idea into a cabin and played it at a completely different speed.
What has changed since is what gets blamed. Hereditary runs the possession through a family's own inheritance, and Talk to Me hands it to teenagers as a party trick with a timer. The demon is increasingly less interesting to these films than the household it lands in.
