Survival horror strips the question down to logistics. There is a way out, it is a long way off, and the film is the arithmetic of getting there with fewer people than you started with.
The Thing runs it as a locked-room problem where the room is Antarctica and one of the people is the threat. The Descent does it underground and gets most of its dread from the geology before anything with teeth appears.
The lighter-equipped versions are often the worst to sit through. Open Water leaves two divers in the sea with sharks and no way to fight back, and Green Room traps a touring punk band in a venue run by neo-Nazis who decide there should be no witnesses.
